And then finally I found SharpReader. SharpReader is a stand alone RSS reader for Windows. It has a three paned interface, like an email client. I always hated using email clients for email, but somehow for RSS feeds it's the perfect solution.
SharpReader also has a fair number of bells and whistles, including the ability to filter your feeds, set the refresh rate of your feeds by individual feed or by category, set your feeds to purge items that are older than a certain date, and more. Subscribing to a feed is really easy. You just type (or copy and paste) the feed url into the address bar and hit the subscribe button. And what's cool is that you can read a feed without subscribing to it.
I highly recommend it to anybody who tracks a serious amount of feeds.
