The New Yahoo!
The newly redesigned Yahoo! went live today. It's been in beta forever. I was picked a few months ago to start using it early, but I actually haven't gotten to play with it much since I don't really use the Yahoo! homepage. But this new design is so slick I might just start.
The new page features some slick new organization, making all the features and services provided by Yahoo! more easily accessible. The style is significantly different as well, with a very Web 2.0, Ajax-y feel to it. Quite nice.
I only have a couple of thoughts. One, it'd be nice if on the little dashboard thingy that tells you about your mail and weather and so forth, you could swap out some of the services for others. For instance I'd much rather have my latest calendar entries than my horoscope. (I'm a computer nerd; Microsoft, Apple, and Google control my fate, not the stars.) Another nice thing would be the ability to control which Yahoo! services are listed on the far left. According to the tour they give you when you start using the page, that feature is "coming soon", but since they've been saying that since they first unrolled the preview back in February, who knows.
My question though is this, is the intention of the new Yahoo! home page to replace people's My Yahoo! pages? If it's not, then they should really take a look at upgrading that. Give it a fresh new look like the home page and some new Ajax-y features, and My Yahoo! would be the best start page on the internet. They already have the content and the services, they just need to catch up with the technology behind pages like Netvibes or Protopage.
