I unzip a lot of zip files. If you download a lot of stuff, you probably do as well. A lot of people use WinZip to handle their zip files. But WinZip has a big downside. It's shareware, which means that unless you register and fork over 30 bucks, it treats you to a nag screen every time you start the program. What's worse is that the nag screen lasts longer the longer you use the program!
I found the solution to this problem a few weeks ago. It's a freeware program called ZipGenius. Zip Genius is a powerful program for handling not just zip files, but many archive file formats including .rar, 7-zip files, .exe, ARJ, ACE, CAB, and a lot more. It also comes in two editions: The Standard version which just lets average users unzip and zip files, and the Suite edition which includes some excellent features for power users like an FTP client for uploading your zip files to a website, an album maker to create slideshows with your favorite pictures, and a Cutter utility for cutting large files into smaller pieces. Think you have to pay for the Suite edition? Nope, it's completely free just like the standard version.
And no worries about this software. It's been tested and given the highest ratings by such tech powerhouses as Softpedia, Snapfiles, and CNET. Softpedia certified it as being 100% clean of spyware, adware, trojans and other nasties.
The program is easy to use. Just double click the file you want to unzip. A window pops up letting you view what's in the file, which is great for added security. Then just click the Extract button and a dialogue will pop up letting you choose where to unzip the files to, as well as some advanced options (creating subfolders, running setup files, closing ZipGenius it's finished, etc.). And it has a nice clean easy-to-understand interface.
You really can't go wrong with this program. Why pay 30 dollars for WinZip when you can get a program that's twice as powerful for free! If you have Windows XP, you technically don't need a zip program (for zip files at least), but this program allows you to work with so many kinds of files and gives you so many options that I, an XP user, already find it indispensible.
