$5.50 Movie Giveaway: Sleepers
Sometimes you just miss. This has got to be one of the worst films I've ever seen.
Sleepers is the disturbing story of four boys who grow up in Hell's Kitchen in the 1960's. When a childhood prank goes wrong, all four are sentenced to the Wilkinson home for boys where they are brutally and sadistically abused for an entire year. 15 years later they find a way to get even for their torture.
It seems that this film suffers from massively bad editing. Like they shot a 4 hour movie and then realized "oh hey, nobody will sit through 4 hours of boys under the age of 15 being brutalized, our bad!" and then cut it down to 2 hours.
Then there's the fact that the entire movie is narrated by Jason Patric, his character, "Shakes" apparently waxing poetic about being raped. It seems disingenuous, but maybe that's just me.
The child actors are not half bad at their roles, if you can stomach the horrific things being done to them, but the adults in this movie just suck. Brad Pitt in particular makes you just cringe with his "wounded inner child" routine. And I don't think I even have to explain Jason Patric to anybody. Kevin Bacon is believable as a disgusting pedophile, but frankly that's a pretty one dimensional role to play, at least the way he does it. DeNiro is the only light that shines in this picture, but he can always be depended on.
In short, just skip this movie. If you must, don't buy it or rent it. Leave your name and a link to your site or your e-mail address (feel free to disguise it, ie. katyggls at yahoo dot com) in the comments and I'll draw a name and give it to you. I'll ship it to you free of charge and everything (as long as you live in the U.S.). It's a new thing I'm starting. Whenever I buy a movie in the $5.50 bin and I don't like it, I'll give it away. It's more space on my DVD rack for a new movie and a free DVD for you.
